“Build it and they will come…… Dude”

This follows on from the last post about 38degreesthe use of social media and the idea of “go to where the people are”.

I was in a meeting with some colleagues talking about how get the public sector more
engaged with social media and how we should “go to where the people are” and absolutely not pursue a “build it and they will come” philosophy.

Field of Dreams
Kevin built the "Field of Dreams"........... and they came
Obviously my cultural reference point for this is, ‘The Field of Dreams’ starring Kevin  Costner. My colleague, of a similar age, completely got the reference point and we were nodding vigorously in agreement together. Ahhh, all so satisfying…….

Then the bombshell. The other colleague in the meeting, who is about 10/15  years
younger than us, said “I thought that was Wayne’s World 2 – WayneStock, build it and they will come”.   Arrgghhh…… Not so satisfying now. Then a panic, didn’t they say something similar on South Park or in World of Warcraft? Must check it out with my kids.

As it turns out we all misquoted these films anyway, but we all knew what we were on

So, what’s the PONT?

  1. Be careful with references to popular culture; check out the
accuracy of quotes (some film geek will point out the error of your ways).
  2. Acknowledge that colleagues might well have different points of reference
for popular culture, particularly those people from different timeframes (10
years plus = little common ground on music).
  3. Oh yes, “go to where the people are”, don’t build it and hope they
    will come.
Wayne's World 2.
Wayne's World 2. Party on, excellent........schwing!

About WhatsthePONT

I'm from Old South Wales and I'm interested almost everything. Narrowing it down a bit: cooperatives, social enterprises, decent public services, complexity science, The Cynefin Framework, behavioural science and a sustainable future. In 2018/19 I completed a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship, looking at big cooperative enterprises and social businesses in NE Spain and the USA.
